Composting at home can be an easy and simple way for you to help make a big impact on the planet. Did you know that 30% of a household's waste can be converted into compost? A simple thing like composting really helps to reduce the amount of methane gas that is released into the air. (The release of Methane gas into the air, aids in increasing global warming and climate change).  Never mind that it’s also a great way to keep your garden and lawn looking nutrient and lush. These are just a few reasons why we love to compost. It’s not called black gold for no reason - and who doesn’t like gold?

Storing compost in your kitchen can be tricky for some. You may even wonder how you would go about doing this, so here are some things to watch out for and a few tips on how to make the most of your compost bin.

Firstly make sure you have the right composter for your kitchen (we have a great range that's suitable for all different types of kitchens). We recommend using a ceramic, steel or a bamboo compost bin, as this will cut down the odors of the fermentation process. A countertop compost bin is super handy as it’s easily accessible if you keep it close to your prepping area and it’s easy to store.

Always make sure that you chop up large chunks of fruit and vegetables if they are whole, before you toss them into the composting bin. Make sure to never compost food items such as fish, meat and bones or weeds and seeds from diseased plants. You don't want to infect your garden!

If you are going the 100% organic route, remember that the peels of fruits and vegetables, like bananas, oranges and even apples may contain pesticides, so make sure that your fruits and vegetables are sourced from farms that are pesticide free.

It will take around 6-9 months to ferment. We would suggest that you get two compost bins purely for this reason. Once a bin is full and in the midst of its fermentation, you can start a new bin to ensure that you are always adding to your compost.

If you live in an average size household and continue to compost for a year you could be composting up to 150kg of waste. Now that’s a lot of compost…
